I've been sheet masking on the regular over the past month or two and have been meaning to get around to reviewing them on a weekly basis. But as you may be able to tell from my lack of reviews, that didn't happen. When they announced a weekly sheet mask club on the Asian Beauty subreddit, it was the perfect time for me to finally get around to start writing up reviews! And the first one is this TonyMoly I'm Real Makgeolli sheet mask.
Whenever I saw the mask I assumed that makgeolli was some sort of milk based drink... but I was completely wrong. Makgeolli is actually a Korean sweet alcoholic beverage made out of fermented rice. *The more you know*
Price: The price of this mask varies greatly by where you buy it. At TonyMoly US it's $4, at Ulta it's $3.75, at Urban Outfitters it's $3 or 4 for $10, and at Amazon I bought this in a variety pack for ~$10.50 for 11 masks.
Claims: I'll be frank, I'm not exactly sure how a sheet mask is supposed to be purifying. When I think purifying I think something that's gonna clean the hell outta my pores and when I think sheet masks I think hydration. On the back of the mask it says it's supposed to help give radiance and glow to an uneven skintone (which I very much have.) And according to the Ulta page for this mask it's supposed to replenish your skin and yield *maximum hydration!*
Ingredients: Purified water, Glycerin, Mineral Oil, Butylene Glycol, Allantoin, Polysorbate 80, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Chlorphenesin, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum, Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Tromethamine, Aspergillus/Rice Ferment Extract, 1,2-Hexanediol, Propanediol, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, Perfume, Dipotassium Glycyrrizate, Caprylyl Glycol, Illicium Verum Fruit Extract, Saccharomyces/Xylinum/Black Tea Ferment, Disodium EDTA (cosDNA breakdown here)
I have had not so great experiences with mineral oil so I was a bit hesitant to use this mask. Another ingredient that caught my eye was the rice ferment extract which is probably what the mask is named after.
Fit/ Material: These are the first Tonymoly masks I've tried from the I'm Real line and I would say the fit is... meh. Of course fit is a personal thing but there were too many areas of my face where the mask refused to lie flat. Also the even though the edges were soaked with essence, they still wouldn't lie flat on my face!
Material wise it was a pretty standard cotton sheet mask. Tonymoly claims it's some special 3 layer pulp sheet... but it feels like every other cotton sheet mask out there. It was soft and seemed to soak up and hold the essence nicely. I've tried some masks where the essence seems to sit on the mask instead of being absorbed by it and it feels slippery and uncomfortable when I use it. That's not the case for this mask!
Essence: It had a very watery essence that looked kinda cloudy. There was also a decent amount of it-- 21 grams to be exact! It has a light fancy smelling scent to it, but it dissipated once I wore the mask.
Right After: I only wore this mask for about 15 minutes since I was paranoid I would break out overnight from the mineral oil. But I don't think I could have worn it for too much longer since it was starting to dry up anyways. Perhaps if I had used a silicone cover it would have lasted longer... but it was 12 AM and I just wanted to fall asleep so that didn't happen.
After I finished sheet masking, I had enough essence left in the packet to rub all over my arms, chest, and hands. I also appreciated that it didn't make my face sticky at all. About 10 minutes after I took off the sheet mask, it was completely absorbed by my face. Overall my face felt very nice and plump.
Morning After: Unfortunately my paranoia was not unfounded because a few new closed comedones popped up throughout the next day :( The fact that I didn't use any new product besides for this sheet mask + my history of breaking out from products with high levels of mineral oil makes me think that it was this sheet mask that irritated my skin.
As far as hydration goes, After using the mask at night I did follow up with the Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin cream but I skipped out on a sleeping pack to see how well the mask really hydrated my skin. Unfortunately the effects of the mask didn't last overnight 😔
My skin was pretty much the same as any other night where I skip a sleeping pack.
The bottom line? Would I pay $4 for it? Uh, no thank you. But for $1 or less I think it's an enjoyable mask. While it may not be the most hydrating or best fitting mask out there, it felt soothing and added some hydration to my skin. It also had a very soothing scent which I enjoy right before bed.
If it didn't irritate my skin I would have liked using this mask during the daytime. If you aren't sensitive to mineral oil I think this would be a great mask to use before applying makeup since it hydrates the skin very quickly and doesn't leave any sort of sticky residue behind (so you don't have to worry about washing your face again.)
