Green Beauty Meets Asian Beauty: Reise One Brand Spotlight
Happy Friday, internet friends!! It's been a hot minute since I published two blog post in one week. But I was feeling ambitious last weekend so here we are with a one brand review spotlight post.
Today's post is all about Reise (pronounced like 'rice.') They're a newer green beauty brand from Taiwan. If you know me, you know I love green beauty and I love Asian beauty so this was pretty much the brand for me!
Beautibi started carrying their products at the last of last year and they were kind enough to send me some of their products to try out. As of right now, they carry 4 products and I tried out the 3 that work for combo-dry and dry skin. But honestly, I think people of all skin types could use these products as none of them are super heavy.
The brand's motto is "no waste is the real sustainable lifestyle" and therefore aim to make every aspect of their brand eco-friendly, from sourcing ingredients to manufacturing practices to getting rid of waste.
As you'll notice further down in the post, all their products heavily feature rice bran!
They've even incorporated rice into their packaging as well (Michele has a cool closeup on her site where you can see the rice pieces in the plastic.) According to their site, by replacing the petrochemicals in their packaging with rice-based materials, they've reduced their plastic use by 46%, energy use by 36%, and CO2 emissions by 36%. The bottles are made out of "bio-based" plastic. When burned, this plastic does not release the contaminants that traditional petrochemical-based plastics do. It's also recyclable! Even the boxes that the products are aimed to be eco-friendly too. The paper used is certified by the FSC, and the soybean ink used for printing is more easily biodegradable than traditional ink.
I had to use google translate on their site so hopefully, this information is correct. But from my interpretation, they use rice bran that is otherwise tossed away as rice is processed for consumption. The rice is also sourced from a town in Taiwan that's focused on maintaining soil fertility without applying "chemical" pesticides and fertilizers.
All their products are vegan and fragrance-free.

The toner is hands down my favorite product from the bunch. If you've never used a thicker, Asian toner before you might be confused by its consistency-- it's a bit viscous. If you're familiar with toners like the Whamisa deep rich essence toner, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
Personally, I find it too thick for a 7 skin method because after 4 or 5 layers, my skin starts feeling tacky. I've found the golden number of layers for this toner to be 3. After 3 layers my skin is very hydrated but not sticky or greasy. The toner absorbs relatively quickly, I just wait for a minute or two between layers. Afterward, my skin is plumped and hydrated!
I used some pH strips to test a sample and it came to about a 6.5 so it's moisture-barrier friendly.
Ingredient wise it also looks good. The star ingredient, rice bran extract, is third on the ingredient list so it's abundant in the formula. According to the brand, the rice bran extract contains phytic acid, ferulic acid, and γ-oryzanol. They can act as antioxidants and help with skin elasticity. It's also rich in vitamin a and e which aid in good skin health. Other ingredients of note are 1, 2 hexanediol, saccharide isomerate, and hyaluronic acid. All 3 are water-binding agents which help the skin stay hydrated! Lastly-- the chamomile hydrosol which is anti-inflammatory and moisturizing as well. Considering how many hydrators this toner has, I'm not so surprised my skin is so soft whenever I use it.
This toner would be appropriate for people of all skin types-- oily, normal, dry. I think it would also work for people with sensitive skin as it doesn't contain synthetic fragrance or alcohol. It does have chamomile essential oil but I can't seem to find a lot of information on general skin sensitivity to it (except 1 article that concludes that it's non-toxic at levels under 10%-- it's definitely under 10% in this formulation as it's listed all the way at the end.) Even with the essential oil, this toner doesn't smell like anything to me.
Lastly, the packaging! Like I mentioned in the brand overview section, the bottle is more eco-friendly than traditional plastic bottles. The toner comes with a pump which I am sooo grateful for. It's much less messy that pouring it out onto my hand. It's easy to control and doesn't squirt out product. If I fancied, I could get a half pump, 1/3 pump, or 1/4 pump of product out of it.

It took me a while to figure out how to work lotions into my routine. I like to think of them as amateur moisturizers. They're not moisturizing enough to be used on their own, but when layered underneath a moisturizer or oil or both, they do a good job at helping the skin stay supple (goodbye transepidermal water loss!)
This lotion comes in a cute little bottle with a pump. Yay for pumps! It wears really well, even under heavier (finicky) oils that enjoy pilling with every single moisturizer I slap on my face (looking at you, the Ordinary rosehip oil.) I can't wear this on its own, but when paired with a lighter moisturizer, it's ace. I really enjoyed wearing it under Farmacy's honey-drop moisturizer. Both have lighter formulas that aren't enough for my winter skin. But when worn together they give me nice, slightly dewy skin that wears well under makeup all day long!
Like the hydrating toner, the 3rd ingredient of this lotion is also rice bran extract, which again is rich in antioxidants and vitamins. Other nourishing ingredients are radish root ferment filtrate, camellia seed oil, and olus oil (which I learned from Michele's blog is an occlusive similar to mineral oil, except that it's made of veggies!) Another interesting ingredient is phytosteryl hydroxystearate. It's rich in omega 6 unsaturated fatty acids, an essential fatty acid that helps maintain your skin's moisture barrier-- and it's effective when applied topically!
While this product is aimed at people with normal to dry skin, I think it could work with oilier skin-types too. It's not a heavy formula and isn't greasy in the slightest bit. It might even be moisturizing enough to be worn as a standalone moisturizer!
Out of the three products, this was the only one with a slight discernable scent. It smells like rice. I've come to equate the smell of rice with soothing skincare (thanks to Cosrx) so I personally don't mind the smell. Whether you like it or not, it's not a big deal as the scent isn't even noticeable unless you're specifically sniffing the product.

And now we come to the one semi-flop. I say semi-flop because it was my least favorite product of the group, but it wasn't awful.
It did an okay job at removing my makeup and sunscreen. I honestly don't expect any cleansing water or micellar water to remove every speck of makeup, so this wasn't a big deal. It removed most of my makeup, but if I wiped a towel across my face I would still get brown residue from my foundation. It's on par with other cleansing waters and makeup wipes I've tried.
It did NOT work with waterproof mascara and it did NOT work for my eyes. They instantly started burning when I applied the cleansing water to my eyelid. Thankfully a quick rinse with water and I was fine.
The surfactant used in the formula is decyl glucoside and according to my friend google, it's a gentle surfactant found in baby products and products targeted towards folks with sensitive skin. Ipso facto it's a gentle cleanser. And I did find that to be the case! It did not irritate or strip my skin. It wasn't drying but it also wasn't hydrating. Because of that and because of the fact that it burned my eyes, I prefer the Hyggee all-in-one cleansing water I bought last summer from Beautibi. I find it to be even gentler and it works fine with my sensitive eyes.
Like the other two products, it also contains rice bran extract, chamomile water and oil, and aloe juice. Like the toner it did not have a scent and it also had a pH of around 6.5, making it moisture barrier friendly in my book!
