Beauty Gifts 102: Detox Market's Best of Green Beauty Box
Today we'll be chatting about another skincare gift set, although this one is more a hooray-new-years box rather than a hooray-Christmas box. It's the Detox Market's Best of Green Beauty box!
The PR package housing this set arrived at my doorstep at the beginning of the month so I've gotten a week or two to play with the products. A few of the items were things I already owned. That said, this post isn't going to be a full-on review but rather an overview and first impressions of the products from the box I've tried so far. If I waited to properly review the box, it would be long gone and sold out!
The box retails for $149 and as you've probably deduced at this point, is sold by the Detox Market. It includes everything from haircare to skincare to makeup! In total it has 6 full-sized products and 3 travel-sized minis with a whopping value of $310+. As with all value sets, I recommend ignoring the stated value of the box and instead focus on your personal value by tallying up the cost of the products you know you would use. If that number is higher than the retail price, it's worth a splurge 😏

Lemme just say while I like powder cleansers in theory... in practice, they don't usually work out for me. The jury is still out for this cleanser. I haven't pH tested it yet, but I remember when it came out earlier this year people were saying it had quite a high pH.I'll update the post with the pH after I test it! I used my pH strips and found it to have a pH of around 7-7.5.
One thing I really love about this cleanser is that it comes with a little, scoopy, spatula spoon thing so you know the right amount to use. Not knowing just how much cleanser to pour out has been a common issue I've faced with cleansers. This one foams up nicely and has a mostly smooth texture. It's also got an earthy, green tea scent which is a pro or con depending on your feelings on green tea.
On the side of the box, it recommends that people with normal/ drier skin only use it a few times a week, which I appreciate. A skincare pet-peeve of mine is when brands market their products as perfect for all skin types when they really aren't. So far I've used this twice and it hasn't dried me out! I'm not sure how my skin would fare if I decided to use it on a daily basis though. I can say it was much gentler than the Tatcha rice cleansing powder which strips my skin the second it touches my face! I think using this once or twice a week as a deep clean/ gentle physical exfoliator will work out nicely for my skin.

I started using the full-sized version of this mist last month as I received it as a PR gift in the Detox Market's November detox box (their monthly subscription box.) It was an instant love, I mean look at that ingredient list! It's hands down one of the most moisturizing mists I've tried. Looking at the ingredient list you might suspect that it would make your skin greasy or oily, but that's not the case at all. It's actually rather lightweight. I wouldn't call the mist fine but it also isn't heavy, it's simply somewhere in the middle. I wasn't crazy about the scent at first but it's grown on me. I don't love it, but I do associate it with the soothing feel of this mist so I like it more.

This is the sort of big-ticket item that entices me to buy these types of boxes. Would I spend $135 on a moisturizer? Absolutely not. But would I want to try a $135 moisturizer available in a $149 box? Absolutely yes!
I've only used this moisturizer 2 times but I already know that it's something that would be better suited for the summer for my dehydrated skin. It has a thin, almost watery texture and sinks in very quickly. I was able to layer this moisturizer on top of itself without it pilling! Unfortunately, I would have to layer 3 or 4 layers of it for it to be enough to my skin in the winter. Considering how pricey this moisturizer is, I'm going to be saving it for the summer instead. Although if you have oily skin, I think this would be a nice (albeit expensive) moisturizer to try!
I like that it has a pump. The product comes out evenly instead of violently squirting out. It has a reasonably strong rose geranium scent.
There's no doubt that dietary supplements sky-rocketed in popularity in 2017. Niche green beauty brands like the Beauty Chef and Moon Juice Beauty entered mainstream retailers like Sephora and Urban Outfitters. Despite their growing popularity, I have yet to try any! Some of them include ingredients that I'm a bit skeptical of, but the star ingredient in this beauty boost is collagen which is pretty tame as far as these types of mixes go.
There actually is research that shows that ingestible collagen can have positive results (although more research needs to be done and the results aren't conclusive by any means.) But still, the potential is there!
I haven't tried this yet because I'm afraid it will taste awful... so I'll post an update on Instagram when I work up the courage to give it a go. If you're intrigued by supplements but are also cautious of them at the same time, a mini like this is nice to dip your toes in the pool.

It's been a while since I used a powder liner. When I think powder liner, I think smudgy, smoky eyes (sometimes on purpose, sometimes not so much.)
This is a rather firmly pressed powder so there isn't too much fallout/ kick up when I dip my brush into it. It isn't the deepest darkest black, but rather a soft black. Thankfully I can't really tell that it's not super black when I'm wearing it on my eyes.
I don't have a lot of lid space and my lids do get kind of oily through the day so unsurprisingly, this smudged when I wore it alone. Then again so does every other eyeliner, even the ones I love. But when worn over an eyeshadow primer, this lasts nicely throughout the day!
I do wish it had a teeny mirror on it but maybe I'm just spoiled 😅
UPDATE: I just read the instructions for this and see that while you can wear it dry, to wear it as a liner I'm supposed to wet a brush, dip it in the pan, and form a paste on the other side of the compact. I did not do this-- a reminder to always read the instructions! I will try this tomorrow morning and report back at the end of the day.
One thing to note is that this only has a 6-month shelf life. Usually, I ignore shelf life when it comes to makeup but since this is a green beauty product, I'm more concerned with the shelf life. Only time will tell if this goes bad after 6 months or not!
UPDATE 2: I wore the eyeliner following the instructions on the box and had better results! It's a lot darker and blacker when worn wet. It was also more easy to apply. When worn with an eyeshadow primer it wore well throughout the day with minimal smudging. But going back to the shelf life issue, I can't help wondering if constantly dipping a wet brush into a powder is going affect how long the product lasts. I guess only time will tell!

My lashes are extremely stubborn and refuse to stay curled. There are only a handful of mascaras I've tried that manage to keep my lashes curled, and they're all waterproof. I've had a tube of this mascara in my stash for a few months and I have to say it's exceeded my expectations.
This looks really nice on my curled lashes! It adds length without making them clumpy. Unfortunately, my curled lashes quickly start falling flat. This is the case for every non-waterproof mascara I've tried and even some waterproof ones so I'm not surprised. So instead I've started wearing it over a thin coat of waterproof mascara for that va-va voom look!
It doesn't smudge or flake throughout the day although that's not an issue I usually have anyways.

I've tried a few green deodorants in 2017 and they've ranged from just okay to nice. They work fine on an everyday basis but if I'm going to exercise then I'll stick to my regular drugstore deodorant. I haven't used this one enough to know how I really feel about it. The scent gets an A+ in my book! It's very refreshing.
I have mixed feelings on the jar packaging. On one hand, I like that I can blend it into my skin with my fingers so I don't have to worry about getting excess deodorant on my clothes. On the other hand, I don't particularly enjoy rubbing my hands in my armpits. It's an extra effort as I have to wash my hands afterward to continue with my skincare/ makeup routine.

I've been using the Rahua volumizing shampoo pretty regularly over the past month so I was excited to get my hands on two more products from their line-up.
One thing I've noticed with the Rahua products is how gentle they are on my scalp. If you follow me on Instagram you've probably heard me whining about my itchy, flaky scalp. Gross but true. This original shampoo might even be gentler than the volumizing shampoo!! It properly cleanses my hair but it doesn't strip it of all moisture. It doesn't lather much but I'm used to that since I use SLS-free shampoos most of the time. It also smells amazing-- it has a coconutty citrus scent that I love. One thing I noticed with the volumizing shampoo is that I have to wash my hair less frequently when I regularly use it. I can't say if that's the case for this shampoo as I haven't used it long enough to determine that, but I hope it is!
The conditioner is also nice-- lightweight but hydrating. My hair is really soft afterward. I'm shocked at how much I like it since I prefer masks over conditioners since my hair is long, curly, and dry af. This is one of the most hydrating conditioners I've tried in a while!

I've been obsessed with Marvis's toothpaste over the past few months so I was excited to try another fancy toothpaste. How can one even review toothpaste? The packaging is nice; it comes with a metal tubey squeezey thing (very official name, I know.) It has a really fresh minty scent... but it doesn't really taste minty. It doesn't have much of a taste. Personally, I'm not a fan of the taste but then again I love a good sweet, minty toothpaste!

I've tried a few green deodorants in 2017 and they've ranged from just okay to nice. They work fine on an everyday basis but if I'm going to exercise then I'll stick to my regular drugstore deodorant. I haven't used this one enough to know how I really feel about it. The scent gets an A+ in my book! It's very refreshing.
I have mixed feelings on the jar packaging. On one hand, I like that I can blend it into my skin with my fingers so I don't have to worry about getting excess deodorant on my clothes. On the other hand, I don't particularly enjoy rubbing my hands in my armpits. It's an extra effort as I have to wash my hands afterward to continue with my skincare/ makeup routine.

I've been using the Rahua volumizing shampoo pretty regularly over the past month so I was excited to get my hands on two more products from their line-up.
One thing I've noticed with the Rahua products is how gentle they are on my scalp. If you follow me on Instagram you've probably heard me whining about my itchy, flaky scalp. Gross but true. This original shampoo might even be gentler than the volumizing shampoo!! It properly cleanses my hair but it doesn't strip it of all moisture. It doesn't lather much but I'm used to that since I use SLS-free shampoos most of the time. It also smells amazing-- it has a coconutty citrus scent that I love. One thing I noticed with the volumizing shampoo is that I have to wash my hair less frequently when I regularly use it. I can't say if that's the case for this shampoo as I haven't used it long enough to determine that, but I hope it is!
The conditioner is also nice-- lightweight but hydrating. My hair is really soft afterward. I'm shocked at how much I like it since I prefer masks over conditioners since my hair is long, curly, and dry af. This is one of the most hydrating conditioners I've tried in a while!

I've been obsessed with Marvis's toothpaste over the past few months so I was excited to try another fancy toothpaste. How can one even review toothpaste? The packaging is nice; it comes with a metal tubey squeezey thing (very official name, I know.) It has a really fresh minty scent... but it doesn't really taste minty. It doesn't have much of a taste. Personally, I'm not a fan of the taste but then again I love a good sweet, minty toothpaste!
