Saturday Skin: Pretty or Functional? | Stories of a Millennial Pink Wonderland
Because I'm guilty of being in the basic bitch club, I can easily admit that the first thing that drew me to Saturday Skin was their packaging. Light pastel pink bottles, minimal block white text, it's my aesthetic. It's a millennial pink wonderland. And I'm not the only one who noticed.
While they started off the year being sold at K-Beauty specific retailers (since they're a South Korean brand) like Peach & Lily and Take Good Care, they've expanded into Urban Outfitters, Bloomingdale's (at the time of this post, they have a free gift with purchase of a mini mist!) and Nordstrom. Just last week they officially launched at the mecca of beauty stores-- Sephora!
But is the stuff on the inside just as good as the packaging on the outside? Is it worth the hype? Read on to find out in my Saturday Skin brand review (fucking duh-- but it felt weird not including the sentence, regardless of how obvious it was ๐ )
I swear I didn't set out to purchase their entire collection of skincare, but somehow it worked out that way and I ain't really mad about it ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ #skincareaddictproblems.
When I first heard of the brand way back when last winter, there weren't that many reviews for their products out there. And the majority of ones that were published, were all... empty? You know the reviews that don't actually share any info and read more like a press release and are most likely sponsored but aren't actually disclosed as such ๐ (Nothing wrong with sponsorships, I do them too, but they're annoying when bloggers aren't honest about them)
Anyways the lack of reviews was my motivation for trying some of their products and it sort of just...went downhill for my wallet after that. Of course, I'm a bit late because by now there are plenty of legit reviews out there but I still wanted to share my opinions ๐
Before we get into the individual reviews, I wanted to share some background info on the brand itself. The brand page on their English site doesn't have much info, but Peach & Lily does! Here's an excerpt that sums up all the important shit:
"Created by the scientists at the iconic wellness center, CHAUM, with a sprawling network of 15 hospitals and 27 research labs in Seoul, this seriously innovative brand gives you results. The signature patented ingredient, Cha-7 es Complexโข is engineered through a fermentation technology from 7 recombinant peptides that powerfully combat skin aging."
Their parent company, Chalogy, has a fun interactive web page that gives an overview of the 7 peptides compromising the "Cha-7 es Complex." According to them, the complex is supposed to
"restore skinโs optimal level of renewal" by "targeting key signs of aging skin: wrinkles, fine lines, visible pores, dullness, uneven skin tone and texture and loss of elasticity."
Peptides are one of those controversial ingredients as there are a bagillion different ones out there and there isn't a consensus on their efficacy. On one hand there isn't a lot of peer-reviewed published research on them, but on the other hand, the lack of research doesn't indicate that they aren't effective, just that they aren't well researched.
I think at the end of the day, you have to decide how much of it you believe and how much $ you're willing to invest in finding out.
Even though the complex is the claim to fame for this line, all the peptides are listed all the way at the end of the ingredient list for every product. I'm not a peptides expert so I have no idea what percentage is needed to be effective, but I thought it was interesting to note that their star ingredients weren't heavily present.
From my own rudimentary ingredient analysis, I also found there's a group of essential oils found in every single product as well-- lemon peel oil, orange peel oil, grapefruit peel oil, Juniperus Mexicana oil, lavender oil, and rosemary leaf oil. They give the products a really lovely scent and offer various benefits according to the Saturday Skin site, but if you have sensitive skin they might irritate your skin.
Anyways enough of that ingredients nonsense, what really matters (at least to me) is if the products work!

Review: This was my first foray into the brand aaaand it's not my favorite. The cream has a nice and thick texture but it isn't moisturizing enough for me. After a few hours of wearing it, my skin starts feeling dry and tight and if I don't mist, eventually greasy (since my skin is trying to overcompensate for the dryness.)
It works okay as a daytime cream in the summer, but come winter it's not enough. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of Glossier's priming moisturizer rich. Both of them are what I consider deceptively rich. They have a decadent texture and are crazy moisturizing upon first application, but the effects aren't lasting and my skin is once again dry a few hours down the road. That said, if you enjoy Glossier's PMR you might enjoy this as well.
My favorite part of this cream is the packaging. It comes with an airless pump that dispenses the cream out as a flower. Plus, I'm pretty sure you can unscrew the top and take out the pump. Whenever I finish the cream I'm going to see if I'm able to refill the jar with a cream I like better.
Like I mentioned up above, it has the same scent as the rest of the line-- light and citrusy.

Review: Whenever I see a mist feature denatured alcohol, warning bells go off in my head. "DANGER, DANGER, DANGER: DRYNESS AHEAD." But because I like a little bit of danger (I don't) I threw caution to the wind and bought the damn thing because I had a 20% off coupon to Urban Outfitters and resisting the millennial pink packaging was, as always, futile.
Surprisingly, I liked this despite the alcohol-induced dry down (aka that feeling of the mist being quickly absorbed/ evaporated.) Personally, I don't mind the dry down because it doesn't leave my skin dry or matte. I just feel like I've absorbed the mist super quick.
There are two types of mists in the worlds. Those that do shit and those that are the shit since they actually add moisture to your skin. This is off the latter.
Sometimes in the summer, I would spritz 3 or 4 layers of this in my routine and it was a fab way to quickly add a burst of moisture to my routine! I also really like the mister on this. It's fine but powerful so I don't have to click 234234 times to get a sufficient amount. It's perfect for a midday pick me up over sunscreen/ makeup since it doesn't disrupt anything.
Saturday Skin Balancing Act Skin Smoothing Lotion
Price & Size: $39.00 for 4.05 oz
Available via Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Urban Outfitters, & Peach & Lily
Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Hydrogenated Poly (C6-14 Olefin), Hydrogenated Polydecene, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Pentylene Glycol, Chondrus Crispus Extract, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugarcane) Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Juniperus Mexicana Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Hydrolyzed Avocado Protein, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Tromethamine, Dimethicone, Caprylyl Glycol, Hydrogenated Lecithin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Cholesterol, PEG-800, Maltodextrin, Polysorbate 20, Saccharide Hydrolysate, SH-Oligopeptide-1, SH-Polypeptide-1, SH-Oligopeptide-2, SH-Polypeptide-22, SH-Polypeptide-45, SH-Polypeptide-8, SH-Polypeptide-9, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol
Review: I wasn't sure what to think of this lotion when I first started using it but it has slowly grown on me. It has a lightweight consistency that's easily spread and absorbed. I also like the pump that comes with it! The product comes out evenly and I've never had any problems with it being clogged/ dried up despite the fact that I use it infrequently.
I cannot use it as my sole moisturizer, but I do like layering it underneath other moisturizers. But if you have oily skin, it might be enough for me.
One thing I should note is that I've had issues with this pilling when used with oils usually when I didn't wait for it to dry down completely. And if I had to apply an oil without waiting a bit, I would pat it in instead of rubbing and usually wouldn't have the pilling issue then.
The citrus scent is quite pronounced in this. It isn't surprising that out of the entire collection, all the cream products (this one, the cream, & essence) have the strongest scents.
I think a big selling point of this lotion is the value. Most mid-range moisturizers have 1-2 fl oz whereas this one has more than 4. The $/ oz breakdown is basically $10/ oz which is a great value for a mid-range brand.

Review: I actually won this in an Instagram giveaway run by Saturday Skin! That unfortunately means I've only had it for a few days so I don't have a proper review for it yet.
What I can say is that it sinks in incredibly quickly. I'm not very good at remembering to use eye creams but this one absorbs quickly + has adorable packaging so I've been pretty good at remembering to use it ๐ (although it is very bulky in comparison to most eye creams.) Also, it comes with a decent amount of product! Most eye creams come with 0.5 oz of product but this one comes with a full ounce. In addition, the pump packaging is quite handy!
I'll share a review on my Instagram after using it for longer and add it to this post.
Saturday Skin Freeze Frame Beauty Essence

Review: I don't really get why they call this an essence because there's nothing essence-y about it. But that's just me.
Rather it has a consistency of a thicker serum. I was confused by the name at first because the mini I got as a GWP purchase came packaged in a squeezy tube and I've never seen an essence in a squeezy tube before.
I like this for moisturizing and that's about it? It doesn't make my skin brighter, tighter, or smoother or anything. But then again, it doesn't claim to!
I took this tube on vacation and it was super handy because I didn't have much time to do a lengthy skincare routine. Instead of layering up on toners and mists, I could slap on a layer of this essence and get the same amount of hydration! Unlike the lotion, I didn't have issues with this pilling. It wore well under oil, moisturizer, sunscreen, and makeup.
The full size is packaged with the same pump as the lotion which I like. And like I mentioned (half a dozen times already) it has that same citrusy scent as the rest of the line.
Btw you used to be able to buy this in a set of Saturday Skin minis at Urban Outfitters, but they've since sold out ๐ If they do ever come back in stock, I'll share them on my Instagram again!
Saturday Skin Rise + Shine Purifying Cleanser
Price & Size: $26.00 for 4.05 oz
Available via Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Urban Outfitters, & Peach & Lily
Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Myristic Acid, Lauric Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, PEG-32, Potassium Cocoate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Juniperus Mexicana Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Hydrolyzed Avocado Protein, Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi) Fruit Extract, Fragaria Vesca (Strawberry) Fruit Extract, Prunus Persica (Peach) Fruit Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Fruit Extract, PEG-75, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-150 Distearate, Polyquaternium-7, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Maltodextrin, Saccharide Hydrolysate, Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Cholesterol, PEG-800, Polysorbate 20, SH-Oligopeptide-1, SH-Polypeptide-1, SH-Oligopeptide-2, SH-Polypeptide-22, SH-Polypeptide-45, SH-Polypeptide-8, SH-Polypeptide-9, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Benzoate
Review: This was another mini from the GWP I got at Nordstrom and I'm happy I didn't end up impulse buying the cleanser beforehand because besides for the pretty bottle it's mediocre. On the plus side, compared to the rest of the line, it is pretty affordable at $26.00.
Consistency wise it's like a less sticky version of marshmallow fluff. Even before I add water to it, it lathers up easily. A little really goes a long way when it comes to this cleanser. When I do add water to it, it foams up nicely but it isn't really a thick or heavy foam (I consider this a pro since often times heavy foams are drier/ more difficult to rinse off.) It does rinse off easily and doesn't leave my face with a film or residue. I wouldn't use this as my sole makeup remover because it definitely doesn't remover all my makeup, then again I didn't expect it to #teamoilcleanser #teamdoublecleanse. The downside is that it leaves my skin a bit too dry for my liking with that unfortunate squeaky clean feeling.
In comparison to the rest of the line, the citrusy scent in this cleanser is pretty much non-existent. Once I lather it up, it has that (IMO gross) generic scent soap that I loathe. I don't notice it too much because I usually move onto my next skincare step within a minute or two. For the sake of testing, I washed my hands with this cleanser and noticed the scent definitely lingered around.
Overall I find this cleanser to be very meh. It actually reminds me a lot of the First Aid Beauty face cleanser which I also find a bit bland. The FAB cleanser has a similar texture and scent but it doesn't leave my face dry. Also, the FAB cleanser has a superior ingredient list as it includes some soothing ingredients like aloe juice and green tea extract and it's free of any essential oils.
I don't have pH strips but I did recently order some off Amazon! When they come in I'll update the post with the pH ๐
Saturday Skin Spotlight Brightening Sheet Mask
Price & Size: $6 for 1 mask or $30 for 5 masks
Available via Sephora, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Urban Outfitters, Take Good Care, & Peach & Lily
Ingredients: Saccharomyces Ferment, Water, Methylpropanediol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Alcohol, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea Leaf Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Nelumbo Nucifera Flower Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Juniperus Mexicana Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Cholesterol, sh-Polypeptide-1, sh-Polypeptide-8, sh-Polypeptide-9, sh-Polypeptide-45, sh-Polypeptide-22, sh-Oligopeptide-1, sh-Oligopeptide-2, PEG-800, Polysorbate 20, Carbomer, Disodium EDTA, Potassium Hydroxide, Ethylhexylglycerin
Review: The pricing for this mask is sort of weird. Usually when you commit to buying a box of masks, you receive some sort of discount. But it's no cheaper to buy a box of 5 masks than it is to purchase 5 masks individually. Oh well.
Let's start off with the good. The material of this mask is very soft-- I personally love thin, biocellulose masks because they cling so well to the contours of my face. It's packaged between two plastic mesh layers which help the mask be super extra juicy before you slap it on your face, and also prevents the essence from dripping all over you. The downside is it's a bit wasteful. It was also really easy to apply. Usually, when masks come packaged between two separate layers, I have to remove both the extra layers otherwise the mask is stiff and doesn't lie flat. This one fit perfectly without much wiggling!
I also appreciate how they have explicit instructions on the packaging to tell you how to apply the mask! It might sound obvious but sometimes you don't know which side to apply, how many layers there are, etc. so I appreciate that they shared that info.
Onto the bad.
I wasn't impressed with the results of this mask at all.
I wore it for about 20 minutes and when I took it off my skin looked sorta hydrated and brightened. Within a minute or two, my face was completely matte!! Das not a good look on me. I ended up patting the extra essence that was left over in the pouch (there was a generous amount) and once again it dried down quickly. The next morning my skin wasn't extra hydrated or extra brightened or extra anything. The sheet mask had no effect on my skin whatsoever.
So even though I enjoyed the fit I would not repurchase this sheet mask for $6 because the results were non-existent.
Also, it had the same citrusy scent as the other products, but with a heavy dose of alcohol added. Not a fan.
Saturday Skin Quench Intense Hydration Sheet Mask
Price & Size: $6 for 1 mask or $30 for 5 masks
Available via Sephora, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Urban Outfitters, Take Good Care, & Peach & Lily
Ingredients: Saccharomyces Ferment, Water, Methylpropanediol,1,2-Hexanediol, Alcohol, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Citrullus Vulgaris (Watermelon) Fruit Extract, Aloe Barbadensis leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Juniperus Mexicana Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Cholesterol, sh-Polypeptide-1, sh-Polypeptide-8, sh-Polypeptide-9, sh-Polypeptide-45, sh-Polypeptide-22, sh-Oligopeptide-1, sh-Oligopeptide-2, PEG-800, Polysorbate 20, Carbomer, Disodium EDTA, Potassium Hydroxide, Ethylhexylglycerin
Review: If you glance at the ingredient list of this mask in comparison to the brightening one, you probably noticed that they have many similar ingredients. I don't hold this against them as many of my favorite brands of masks do the same thing-- such as My Beauty Diary and Leaders. And often times I still notice a difference between the masks!
But with these masks... I found this one to be just as lackluster as the brightening one. The fit and material were amaze, but the actual essence was poopy.
Bottom Line
I'm gonna wrap up this post by answering the most important question ever asked in the history of the universe-- what are the stars of the collection?
The mist, the essence (maybe), and the eye cream (although my thoughts are still preliminary on this one) are my favorites from the collection and the ones I have the most interest in repurchasing! As you can tell from my I don't reaaaallly think the products are anything extraordinary. If they had ugly packaging I honestly don't think I would have been as incentivized to buy/ try/ use them. But skincare is fun for me and I get enjoyment out of pretty pink bottles so they were worth it for me.
Have you tried anything from the brand? Do you want to? Are you also a sucker for any millennial pink beauty product?
While they started off the year being sold at K-Beauty specific retailers (since they're a South Korean brand) like Peach & Lily and Take Good Care, they've expanded into Urban Outfitters, Bloomingdale's (at the time of this post, they have a free gift with purchase of a mini mist!) and Nordstrom.
